The Egyptian walking onion (Allium cepa var. viviparum), also known as the tree onion, is a distinctive perennial plant celebrated for its unique growth habit and versatility. Originating from Siberia, this onion variety has adapted well to various climates, including those found in the UK.

Culinary Uses

The Egyptian walking onion offers a variety of edible parts:

  • Bulbs: The small bulbs at the base of the plant can be harvested in late summer and autumn and can be used as you would use an onion. They possess a strong, pungent flavor suitable for pickling, frying, or using raw in salads.

  • Green Stems: The hollow green leaves resemble spring onions or chives and can be harvested throughout the growing season. They add a mild, onion-like flavor to dishes when used fresh or cooked. Egyptian Walking OnionPlantura

  • Topsets (Bulbils): In mid to late summer, the plant produces clusters of small bulbils at the top of its stalks. These can be harvested and used similarly to the bulbs, offering a slightly milder taste.

Medicinal Uses

While specific medicinal applications of the Egyptian walking onion are not extensively documented, members of the Allium genus are generally known for their health benefits. Onions contain compounds with potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and they are rich in vitamins and minerals that support cardiovascular health. However, it's important to note that consuming the bulbils raw may cause mouth irritation due to their spicy nature. Egyptian Walking Onion

Growing Requirements

Cultivating Egyptian walking onions is relatively straightforward:

  • Location: They thrive in sunny to semi-shady spots with well-draining soil rich in organic matter. A soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is optimal.

  • Planting: Bulbs can be planted in late summer, spaced 30-40 cm apart. They can also be grown in pots with a capacity of 10 liters or more, using a well-draining, nutrient-rich compost.

  • Care: These onions are hardy and require minimal maintenance. They are drought-tolerant but benefit from regular watering during dry spells. Weeding around the plants helps prevent competition for nutrients.
